flicker

I never knew flicker was such a well known site for blogging photos. I heard about it for the first time from taking the course but it turns out many of my friends knew and have been using the site. When I played with the site I found pictures on almost anything I could think of. My pc broke down couple weeks ago and I lost every in it. Sooooo after learning the lesson of not backing up my drive, I am going to start uploading my photos on flicker as much as I can. I really like how you can just drag a bunch of photos at once to upload. I used to use a site called snapfish.com to store photos until they started charging money. But flicker has more options to use and it’s free!
I have never been a “photographer” or knew the joy in taking pictures. I couldn’t even tell the focuses on a photo until I started playing with my friends Nikon digital camera. After years of using a regular digital camera, I realized why people spend so much time and money on professional camera/SLR. It does bring a whole new vision and message to the photo. I can’t afford a digital SLD right now but I would love to own one in the future. My dad owns a Nikon f2 which he bought 20years ago!!!!and it still works fine and it’s his treasure(although he wont let me use it). So investing a lot of money on a camera is worth it.

olpc

      http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9056398

the article is about America’s plan to launch OLPC in 2008. it gives the 3 reasons why it will be beneficial to America.
1. To ensure every child has an opportunity to use computers to learn. Such as poor children who does not have access to a computer.
2. Secondly it will build a critical mass for the community.
3. Education. They believe that children will able to benefit from communicating with people all over the world.

Do I think its a great idea? ummmm... honestly I can think of both pros and cons for this project. I do think it will be a great use for children to communicate and learn about the world. However I still like the old fashion way of teaching. I do think this project could lead to problems if it is not taken care of properly. For example by using computers to write, children may not practice hand writing as much or depend on spell check and other programs.

Overall I do think it can make a huge change for the way  children grow up, and we really don’t know if it would be for the better or for the worst until we try it.

olpc 1

After reading this article i got see the bigger picture of the olpc project and what is realistic and what is not.
As much as it is important for every child to experience learning through the internet there are countries that don’t even have enough teachers. Not having  technology in the classroom is not an issue. They are more focused on getting teachers.
The success of the project really depends on the situation the country is in. I do think it should start small and slowly expand.

scratch

I’ve been playing with the scratch program for a while now and at first I didn’t find it very interesting. I thought it was just another "photoshop" type of program. However after exploring and playing around with it and learning how to use the program it has become very enjoyable.  I have done many art  projects with children, however never took the time to draw and have fun on my own. I feel like a child when I’m being creative with the program.
One thing I really like about the program is the sound system. It’s interesting how different sounds can make you view the work with different perspective. Just like in movies sound makes a huge difference in the meaning the artist is trying to give.

babysitting

I found this website where parents and sitters can post their resume and job positions. It was my first time searching for a job online. I posted up my resume and couple days later i got 3-4 emails from parents wanting an interview. It was great news for me because i was looking for a very casual once in a while baby sitting job. As I was answering these emails I wondered why in the world these parents would leave their child with someone they have never met before. No word of mouth just a resume online. I mean I love working with children and I do my best to give them a great time however not everyone out there is like me. I got to wonder if we were to trusting of the internet and its sources.
I would personally not feel safe leaving my children with someone I have only met once, and even though the resume has my information they would never take the time to check if it was real.  I am not against the site, I know many friends who are great with young children that found jobs through the site. I hope parents do their share of researching and checking references before they leave their children with the sitter.

church

One huge change I have noticed with technology and life is at my church!!
I have been going to church all my life and technology has definitely changed how things worked in church.
One big change is PowerPoint. PowerPoint is used to post up lyrics to praise and bible verses.  Announcements are made through video clips and fun slides shows for special messages. I remember when I was little our praise team was a piano player and couple singers. Now a day’s there is a full "band" with great sound system and everything.

Another thing I noticed in church was all the children (grade school age) playing with their DS.
When I was young church was a time to meet my friends and play hide and go seek in side the church and play games and such but this Sunday I was shocked to see about ten kids sitting against the wall playing with the DS.  Something about that image that made me realized they are growing up in a whole new place than I. I’m so glad I grew up in a time where everything was just simple.

south korea

Technology has evolved so much in the past years. It seems to be apart of everyone’s lives. it is a well known fact that some Asian countries are more advance in technology than North America. I have never realized this until I visited South Korea two summers ago. It felt like technology there was growing every minute. There were so many technology materials I never even knew it existed in this world.  Cell phones seemed to be a very important devise for the nation. Young children to grandparents owned a cell phone more advanced than any phones I have seen in Canada. It seemed to be used for all parts of a person’s life. Cell phones were used as television remotes controls, credit cards, watching television, msn, internet and much more. It was obvious a cell phone was not only for communication but a personal device. There were cell phone battery charger in the subway, movie theatre, convenience stores, malls and etc.
Another amazing surprise I found was the internet. Not only was the internet ten times faster than any fast speed internet in Canada the services were much better and convenient. There is this one Korean internet site where you can ask ANY QUESTION and the answer will come up.
In one word Korea was technology heaven.
however you can not forget that Korea has almost double the population to Canada which means  more technology companies and more companies mean better services to attack the customers. It only makes sense that the services and ideas are always developing.

Technology in me

Technology has always been such a struggle and frustration for me. Ever since the computer and the internet became a daily use for many people I knew I did not want to start. Even when all my friends started using programs like MSN, I had no idea what they were talking about nor was i interested, I just waited until the conversation topic changed. The only time I would use the computer was to type assignments.
it was not until grade 11 i started using the internet as a daily source. It took time for me to learn and get used to however my conclusion of the internet was.....FUN!
chatting with friends became a daily thing as well as creating my own site. I used to design and post up materials on my personal site on Asian avenue and xanga.
the internet a huge part f my life style now. It is used for school, socializing and searching. I cant say that technology has only positive sides to it however it does make my life so much easier and faster~
